These badges are awarded to members of graduating classes of French military schools upon the individuals completion. Badges with have a "short" sword are enlisted men school/class
while a full sized sword are officer school/class. Each badge is struck to celebrate either a battle or person held in high regard by the French military. The badges also may show the branch of service, cross cannons=Artillery, anchor=Colonial Troops (later Troupe d'Marine.)
