Fourteen units of these early torpedo-boats (classified as 4th class torpedo-boats, "torpediniere di 4a classe") were built by Thornycroft for the Regia Marina. Designed to be embarked and deployed by capital ships, were instead used for defence of the major naval bases.

By this point Australia had landed her 'X' turret - the only one of the Kent group to do so. Also prominent abreast her forward superstructure is a Quad 40mm Bofors mount. This was mirrored by another Quad 40mm on the other side of the superstructure. As of mid-1945 the plan was for there to be a 3rd Quad 40mm Bofors on the quarterdeck, two twin 40mm Bofors where X turret used to be, plus her two Octuple Pom Poms, and up to 4 single 40mm Bofors and 4 single 20mm Oerlikons. With the end of the war it is likely that not all of these were fitted, and some - such as the octuple pom poms - are clearly missing in this photo.
