Coaling was hard and dirty work but the monotony of the task was softened a little by music from the ship’s band. Here, it looks like the battleship Provence in taking on coal from a collier tied up alongside. Coal is brought out of the hold in sacks or baskets and emptied out onto the deck from where it is shovelled down into the bunkers. One of the saxophonists has a lapel badge of a musician but the others are a rather motley crowed in ragged jackets and an assortment of headgear. Maybe even the musician have to take their turn at coaling.

USS Indiana (BB-58) fires a salvo from her forward 16/45 guns at the Kamaishi plant of the Japan Iron Company, 250 miles north of Tokyo. A second before, USS South Dakota (BB-57), from which this photograph was taken, fired the initial salvo of the first naval gunfire bombardment of the Japanese Home Islands. The superstructure of USS Massachusetts (BB-59) is visible directly behind Indiana. The heavy cruiser in the left center distance is either USS Quincy (CA-71) or USS Chicago (CA-136) .

Battleship HMS King George V at Seydisfjordur, Iceland after she collided with the destroyer HMS Punjabi, 3 May 1942

At 1545 hours [1 May 1942] north east of Iceland in thick fog the Battlefleet was zigzagging when they ran into a thick bank of fog; immediately KING GEORGE V made a signal to cease zigzagging. Destroyer PUNJABI failed to receive the signal and carried on zigzagging and crossed under the flagship's bows. KING GEORGE V travelling at 25 knots cut PUNJABI clean in half; PUNJABI's stern sank almost immediately. The collision caused a 40 foot gash in the bow of KING GEORGE V and also under water damage. As the stern of PUNJABI sank her ready use depth charges exploded directly under the keel of the WASHINGTON the vessel immediately astern of KING GEORGE V, causing slight damage to WASHINGTON.

The fore section of PUNJABI sank slowly which enabled many of her crew to abandon ship. Destroyers MARNE and MARTIN were able to pick up 201 survivors. 49 were lost mainly from the stern section.

Italy:
Torpedo-boat Pegaso, in 1942

Pegaso was an Orsa-class torpedo-boat; derived from the earlier Spica-class, they had a longer endurance and had better ASW armament. During her career, she had a confirmed submarine kill (HMS Thorn), and two probable kills (HMS Undaunted and HMS Upholder, even though recent research on the wreck seems to make it more likely that the latter sank in a minefield off Lybia).

In the picture we can see in the middle, on the deckhouse, one of the twin 20 mm mounts, and further aft the single 100 mm aft mount. On the sides, the several German-type depth charge launchers (called "Modello G", G meaning German) can be seen.
