I searched and did not find a specific topic on this. A place to post news and discuss tariffs.
_________
It's heating up and not just with the USA.

Canadian's do think they are an exempt special group and ignores WTO after loosing judgements ;

Dairy industries in New Zealand, Australia and the United States seek action in new trade dispute with Canada to force it to live up to trade treaty obligations

The Canadian Government is being accused of “delinquent” behaviour in a second trade row with dairy exporting nations.

The charge alleges “brazen” violation of Canada’s obligations under the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The accusation comes from dairy industry bodies in three countries: New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
They have written to their respective Governments seeking support in a battle against Canadian state subsidies for dairy exports to third markets.

The row follows an earlier one over Canada’s blockage of dairy goods from New Zealand and other exporting nations in violation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). That battle is currently stalemated, despite a series of judgements against Canada and in favour of New Zealand.

This dispute is different, because it involves Canadian exports, not imports, but it has an overlap, in that it stems from Canada’s comprehensive state regulation of its dairy industry.
That regulation, which imposes production volumes and price guarantees, effectively squeezed out New Zealand sales. But it also leaves a surplus of dairy goods available for cut-price exports to third countries.

“Canada is brazenly maintaining a policy approach that is at odds with its international trade obligations,” the letter says.

Review the MFN status for all three of them. Hold the review with all three of them in the room.

Also get USAF Air Mobility Wing on the phone. We may have two large force redeployments back to CONUS to plan.

You want China? Deal. Let us know how that works out, if you are allowed to.

Still you gotta admit, you know you F***ed up your diplomacy when you can get those 3 countries to work together and form a coalition.

Let's put it this way, first time I read it I was thinking it was an April fools joke article.

Or did they just change from stabbing us in the back to stabbing us in the front.

Maybe we just shook things up and found out which way the land really lays before it was too late.

If this is what they want, they can have it. Normalize all our tariffs to match their highest tariff on us. Oh, and they can start taking care of their own sea lanes too.

Oh and if they want to work as a group fine. The highest tariff of any type that any one of the three imposes on us is now the tariff for everything from any one of them. Fair is fare. FAFO.

That's the thing, those 3 countries would normally stab each other, the fact that they are now looking at a coalition means the US kinda F***ed things up recently. Visit those 3 countries museums and its a testament to their hate for each other that has ran for centuries. The South Korean Military Museum has like 4 floors dedicated to "beef with Japan."

Sooner or later, you guys need to admit that you made a mistake. Now if you view anyone that goes against your policies as "backstabbing" you, then you will make a lot of enemies.

As for protecting their sea lanes, they have been doing that without Americas help. If you want to see how brutal they are to each other, watch the vids of the SoKor/Japan/ Chinese Navy/coastguard take care of each other. Far more hands on than just flag waving.

This is not a mistake. This is fixing a mistake.

The actual mistake was letting tariffs be imposed on us without reciprocating.

And I am well aware of how well these three get on with each other, and how they handle their sea lanes.

I don't view them as enemies, just as competitors that have been getting a free ride. And now they themselves wish to work as a block. So be it.

I wish them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors.

It would be interesting how far this blocks cooperation would go and how it would impact the other block next to it, the ASEAN. Well Trump said tariffs to all the countries so we shall see how this goes.

fixing what mistake? The small tariffs by these other countries like Canada and Mexico?

Those are small issues, considering the US already won, you can go bomb another country like Iraq and nobody would really raise an issue for you. The Pax American is basically dictated by the US from military to trade. Nobody is coming out to oppose you.

This is why your current President for me is at worse an asset by your enemies or at the least that voice in your head that the US should be ignoring. What you now have is countries realizing that they have trusted and relied too much on the US. From the US having control on tech and industry world wide, to now being boycotted.

Now if America goes the isolationist route, then that is Americas call, but be prepared for blowbacks.

So far, tariffs or threat of tariffs, have brought over 4 trillion dollars of manufacturing investment into the US. Not bad for 2 months.

You can shore on manufacturing if you can replace what you tariffed and even then you need to produce below tariff costs to make a revenue.

So far manufacturing is going down.

Which manufacturing was onshored again?

The US steel mills fired 1200 workers which is quite astonishing regarding the tariffs on steel.

The Biden approach was better with demanding a certain percentage of US components for US markets.

If the tariffs are not delicately balanced you can disrupt a lot for yourself too.

Especially if you can not replace the stuff adequately.
