“Crash Boats” were high speed boats designed to rescue the crews of aircraft which crashed at sea.
US Crash Boat development came from British experience with high-speed launches (HSL) used by the RAF Marine Branch to rescue the crews of aircraft downed in the English Channel.
The 85-foot Crash Boats used two Packard V12 4M-2500 Engines, this was the same engine used in the PT-Boats.
In addition to their original usage, Crash Boats were also utilized for other purposes, including use by the OSS for special operations.
