4 November 1942: BIG MAMIE arrives for first battle
This image from the 20MM tub on top of turret #2 shows USS Massachusetts (BB-59) just before the Battle of Casablanca. "Lead Dammit Lead" is stenciled on the 20mm gun shield and Texas (BB-35) is at left, in the distance. Both battleships are now preserved as memorials.
BIG MAMIE is about to enter her first battle of the war as a brand new fast battleship and with the great majority of her crew "green". She will leave the battle breaking gunnery records and sinking more ships in one day than any battleship in history.

A USN pilot leaves his Curtiss SB2C-3 Helldiver in the water after going over the side of the carrier USS Charger (CVE-30) during training operations off the US East Coast, June 21st 1944.

This is aircraft 33 of VB-82. Bureau Number 18956, and the pilot as Lieutenant O. R. Browne crashed "over the bow" and suffered a lacerated scalp and other minor injuries.

US Marines from USS Philadelphia CL-41 board a boat to go ashore during Operation Torch off of Safi Morocco - November 10, 1942

The Marines landed at Port of Safi under the command of the US 47th Infantry Regiment and proceeded to the Safi airport to guard it until being relieved the next day

That must be quit an experience for the AAA crew when they fire those main guns just in front of you

77 years ago, the USAAF conducted its first bombing raid (since the Doolittle Raid) against Tokyo, (Nov 24, 1944). 111 B-29s from the 73rd BW attacked targets in and around Tokyo. This was the day when the USAAF discovered the phenomenon of the jet stream
