This photoset represents the conflict between Viet Nam and China in 1979. Some of the images seem to be posed or outright propaganda while others seem to be the real deal. I'm not up to speed on that conflict, and can't tell what's going on for sure in any case. Our Christmas guests have just arrived for presents and dinner, so I'll get back later to add tags and such information as I have.

Vietnam's regulars were deployed to Cambodia at that time, and Chinese used this opportunity to "teach" Vietnamese a lesson. Didn't work out. Vietnamese "territorial defense" units began to conduct guerrilla campaign and inflicted very heavy losses on invading conventional military. Furthermore, the prospect of a full blown war between China and the Soviet Union became very real, so the Chinese declared a victory, conducted a scorched earth policy, and withdrew.

Some from the Vietnamese side. It should be noted that in 3 weeks of fighting exhausting all of the reserves and somehow managing to lose 420 tanks out of available 480 the Chinese forces penetrated only 50km deep into Vietnamese territory. Air Force was practically not employed by the Chinese.

The Chicoms really took a very bad beating at the hands of the NVA with virtually nothing to show for it. Even the casual observer understands why China never repeated such an invasion.

Vietnamese losses were higher than Chinese ones because the bulk of the VPA regular units didn't engage PLA, and it was essentially territorial militias that gave the Chinese more than they bargained for. However, once again, due to the double digits numerical superiority of the invading force, indiscriminate use of artillery by the PLA, Vietnamese losses were staggering.

Chinese air force didn't take part in the invasion as attacking air defenses of Hanoi at that time would have been down suicidal for them. Obviously limited number of sorties were flown early in the conflict in close air support and recon role, but apparently they ceased as well as the Vietnamese had stocks of the Soviet MANPADs.
