Trash like some, not all, Chinese net-zens post is the very reason I quit cold turkey sinodefenceforum this past March which I was a member of since April 2005 and was the head mod for seven years.

There's a press conference in this video starting at 27.00..But I cannot hear the questions. I can only hear the answers.? The Admiral says the engineering/propulsion plant have not been damaged.

Horrid news but glad to hear there are no fatalities. Hope the serious injuries aren't too bad.

SAN DIEGO (July 14, 2020) Sailors stand at attention and salute the national ensign during morning colors behind the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) at Naval Base San Diego, July 14 as the ship endures an ongoing fire. On the morning of July 12, a fire was called away aboard the ship while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego. Base and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communications Specialist 3rd Class Jason Waite/Released)

After everyone saying that the BHR is a total write off, a few on USNI are saying that it may not be a forgone conclusion that it won't/can't be repaired. Island is aluminum, hull is steel. Aluminum melts at 1200 degrees, steel at 2500 degrees.

Big worry here is whilst steel melts at a higher temperature than ally, it begins to change chemical composition at 450c, signfigantly at 650c. If some of the fire temps that have been mentioned are accurate it won't be coming back IMHO.

US Navy...Still SERVING!!

That last photo from the Seahawk is pretty hi-rez! You can also see the heat marks on the hull on the port side forward, the flight deck just further aft, and then just forward of the bridge superstructure!

The press conference put some nice spin on being able to repair Bonny Dick but I'm willing to go out and say that IMHO this is for public consumption. When the chickens come to roost and a "no sh*t" evaluation is made I'm predicting that in the new year the plans to repair will be quietly shelved and she is shuffled off the stage.

The budget is being screwed tighter and tighter and especially when the costs of Covid-19 are factored in, there will simply be no money to spare from the Navy's already parlorous maintenance budget to pour into it. :(

I wonder if there is even any consideration of pulling USS Peleliu out of the reserve fleet and refitting to operate the F-35 and V-22?

Maybe..the ship is held in reserve and not stricken from the Navy list. We will have to wait and see what the final decision will be.

Today in a very quiet no public ceremony USS Tripoli (LHA 7) was commissioned in Pascagoula MS. She is scheduled to be homeported in San Diego. As an added note the ships homeport was decided long before the the fire aboard Bonhomme Richard.

.

Would require significant and costly mods to operate F35s.

You have to wonder what makes more sense. If repairable, repair the BHR at a cost of perhaps $1 billion and several years out of service and then get 10-15 years more use, or spend the 3-4 billion for a new ship in 5 years which will last 40 years? Also, $250 million in updates have already gone up in smoke on the BHR.

And yes, the Tarawa or Peleliu would need updates and only serve a short period. Unless they'd go to sea with Harriers.

Fires extinguished. Hats off to the brave sailors and fire fighters!
