Interesting little piece on the BHR. There are lessons here. In the 1990's and early 2000's, the US allowed many of it's shipyards to close. Even if the BHR could be fixed for free, all shipyards are currently busy with new construction or long deferred maintenance. What would happen in wartime when ships WILL be damaged and must be repaired quickly? Maybe this a strategic lesson to be learned.

What will end up happening is other ships will have to pick up the slack, with longer deployments and more deferred maintenance.

I wonder if there is even any consideration of pulling USS Peleliu out of the reserve fleet and refitting to operate the F-35 and V-22?

I hope so. Tarawa and Peleliu the only two LHA's held in reserve.

The fastest & least expensive way to replace BHR is to place either Peleliu or Tarawa back in service. My "guess-ta-mate" mate is that with all the re-fit needed including upgrades to handle the F-35B would take about 2 years. To build an LHA/LHD from when the first steel is cut to commissioning is 7 years with a cost of $4.1 billion USD..

I'll post this here simply for discussion, but an ESB would make for a piss poor replacement for the Bonhomme Richard. It could never be more than a "lily pad" for a handful of F-35Bs. You couldn't base F-35s there and even if you could, having to do vertical take offs would sure burn lots of fuel.

Excellent images as always @bdpopeye old mate! (Y)

Thank you!!

SAN DIEGO (Aug. 4, 2020) Contractors with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) work to remove the aft mast aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6). The structural integrity of the aft mast, located above the ship’s superstructure, was compromised during a fire last month. Although damage assessments are ongoing, the Navy made the decision, for the safety of the crew, to move forward with removal. On the morning of July 12, a fire was called away aboard the ship while it was moored pier side at Naval Base San Diego. Base and shipboard firefighters responded to the fire. Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability, which began in 2018. (U.S. Navy Photos by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Jeffrey F. Yale)

Crazy thought on the BHR. The COVID bill has $2.2 billion earmarked for hospital ships. If the BHR hull and machinery are in good order, but all other decks need gutting, does it make any sense to convert it to a hospital ship?

Good to see the Giffords fully armed and deployed. The Sec of the Navy, recently said that getting all the LCSs of both classes fully armed and with MCM or ASW modules installed and deployed is a priority. The US taxpayers have invested over $30 billion in these ships, time to return some value. The Indy class seems to be moving along with it's longer legs and huge flight deck.
