That there is one ugly ship!

I don't think it's ugly. UNUSUAL is the word for me. Each one of us is entitled to their own opinion. But if anything makes Zumwalt ugly it is the fact that there's no ammo for her guns...The round designed for Zumwalt guns cost a cool $1 MILLION USD each. That's right one million. The USN is not buying those rounds.

The US Navy is going hard after the officers & one Chief Petty Officer involved with the collisions that occurred aboard Fitzgerald and John S McCain in 2017. The big hammer is coming down.

U.S. Navy Statement on USS Fitzgerald and USS John S. McCain Consolidated Disposition Authority Accountability Actions
US Navy Secretary (SECNAV) Richard V. Spencer is to issue a secretarial letter of censure to former USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) commanding officer Cmdr. Bryce Benson and former crew member Lt. Natalie Combs, for their role in the deadly collision off Japan in June 2018.
The destroyer collided with Filipino merchant vessel ACX Crystal on June 17, about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan. Seven sailors lost their lives in the incident.
The public letter of censure that will be issued by SECNAV is used to publicly shame service members but has no legal implications. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson will also withdraw and dismiss charges in the general courts-martial against the two officers.
“This decision is in the best interest of the Navy, the families of the Fitzgerald Sailors, and the procedural rights of the accused officers. Both officers were previously dismissed from their jobs and received non-judicial punishment,” a US Navy statement read.
USS Fitzgerald was transported from Japan to Mississippi for repairs in January 2018. The total cost of returning the destroyer to operational status, including transport from Japan, is expected to reach close to $370 million dollars.
US shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries is expected to complete works by January 2020.

Thanks Bombardier for your very kind words!.....now a flashback...From Days gone by....

On May 15, 1981 Nimitz departed Norfolk for the final phases of her workup schedule for an upcoming Med Cruise. On the night of May 25 and EA-6B Prowler attempting to land struck a helicopter, then hit another aircraft and a tow tractor. A fuel fire erupted and, although fire-fighting systems reacted quickly, four missile warheads detonated. Fourteen crewmen were killed and 45 injured, three aircraft destroyed and nine damaged. The ship is seen returning to port, May 28, for repairs. She returned to sea less than 48 hours later to complete her training schedule.
