Two Sandown-class minehunters train together off Scottish coast. January 22, 2023. The minehunters are now named the Chernhiv (ex-HMS Grimsby) and the Cherkasy (ex-HMS Shoreham).
The vessels are conducting routine training to familiarise their new crews with their systems and they’re based out of Rosyth currently due to recent modification work.
They are designed for the clearance of mines in shallow coastal waters, and are constructed of glass-reinforced plastic to reduce their magnetic and acoustic signatures, making them harder to detect by mines. The ships can be fitted with remote-controlled mine disposal vehicles to neutralise mines.
