These are M48A5T2, which were converted from M48A2C with MTU 850 HP diesel engine, new transmisison and 105mm M68 main gun with M60A3 fire control system and thermal gunner sights and M60 tracks btw 1982-1990s. At its peak 1,389 M48A5T1 and 758 M48A5T2 were serving the Turkish Army. Currently only the M48A5T2s are kept in service due to their relatively modern engine and thermal sights. Therefore they are mostly using to provide mobile fire support in low intense inter-border security operations.

Yes nowadays the M48's are fire support tool, kind of light tank , and with modern ammunition he can play tank destroyer missions. Even with years, it is still a beast, all the family M48-M60 very solid tanks still in service in second or third lines, in support of more heavy tanks Leopard/Abrams.
