The two darker VAMTACs are from the FNGE (Special Naval Warfare Force) of the Spanish Navy, the other is from the EZAPAC (Parachute Sapper Squadron) of the Spanish Air Force. Both with units of the MOE (Special Operations Command) of the Spanish Army carry out the duty rotations of the components of the Special Ops Force.

Note the two C-90s stowed on the side of the HMG's gunner's shield for quick use by the operator for direct support fire.

In addition to the Special Operations units, a Force Protection unit at Baghdad and support elements, including until recently a group of helicopters Chinooks and/or Cougars at Al Assad Air Base, have been deployed in Iraq by Spain for many years.

Last three Chinooks F of Task Force 'Toro' deployed under Inherent Resolve Op. returned to Spain, last December 2024.

The BIO Hespérides is the only remaining polar research vessel of the Spanish Navy, after the recent decommissioning of BIO Las Palmas (A52) few weeks ago (7 March 2025).

The scientific research campaigns in Antarctic waters and the support to the two Spanish scientific stations in the area, the Antarctic Base Gabriel de Castilla (Deception Island) and the Antarctic Base Juan Carlos I (Livingstone Island) are charged to the 'BIO Hespérides' and also to the civilian vessel 'BO Sarmiento de Gamboa' attached to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The plaque reads:

<<Herewith stand, at the vanguard of UNP 9-64, our beloved Virgin Mary Immaculate Conception, patroness of Spain and its faithful infantry. Mother protector of all her infantrymen deployed in the Holy Land.

LH XXXIX [Libre Hidalgo XXXIX].

On the 25th day of September 2023. [Date of placement of the plaque]>>

The Spanish Armed Forces are deployed in Lebanon since September 2006. The bulk of the contingent in operation 'Libre Hidalgo' is located at the Miguel de Cervantes base, near the town of Marjayoun where the Spanish-led Sector East Headquarters is located. There are also Spanish personnel at the mission headquarters in Naqoura.

The Spanish forces conduct foot and vehicle patrols to permanently monitor the line of separation between Lebanon and Israel. They also establish observatories and carry out other activities in collaboration with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), all aimed at ensuring compliance with UN Resolution 1701 and avoiding situations that could lead to an escalation of tension between the parties.

The Multinational Brigade East, led by Spain and commanded by a Spanish general, is made up of some 3,500 troops of 9 different nationalities. Spain contributes about 670 military personnel to the UNIFIL.

The program for the acquisition of 258 embarked mortars of both 81mm and 120mm is underway. For the last two years, procurement contracts have been signed with Urovesa and Expal (now Rheinmetall Expal) for the Spanish Armed Forces and more than a hundred VAMTAC ST-5 with EIMOS (81mm) have already been ordered.

The Spanish Army also has some older VAMTACs S3/3.5 equipped with the Soltam Cardom mortar system. Photo: Jesus M. Pérez Triana (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands - 3 June 2016).

This is the seventeenth and last Chinook-F delivered by Boeing as part of the Spanish Army's Chinook fleet modernisation programme. An additional Chinook-F was ordered out of the initial programme some time later, its delivery by Boeing to the Spanish Army is scheduled for 2026.
