Other Post So, how was your day?

I always feed birds and squirrels during winter. Temps can become extreme, and I try to help them get by. Off to Tractor Supply I went. 50# of birdseed mixed with sunflower seeds was right at $20. Grabbed a bag - then packages of jerky for my Euro pals - and a bit of dog food.

At the counter I was asked if I'm a vet. Yep! - Back in the day! Seems they have a discount for vets on Nov 11 which turned out to be 17%! The birdseed was $16 and change.

"Thank you for your service!" sez the young lady. "Don't be too hasty - I goofed off every chance I got!" Of course I thanked them profusely. Imagine that - cutting vets a break!

And just for fun - me at age 19. Second tour I was the battalion fuel truck guy - thus the greasy clothes. Picked up the M3 at Graves Registration in Dong Ha for a fast $20 MPC

Respect to the other vets participating here!! Steve

I was a volunteer, and well paid, we still goofed off when we thought no-one was looking. As long as the job got done.

I wouldn’t change any of it, and versus a min wage job at McDonald’s, I’d urge any school leaver to consider the military.

Met a Desert Storm vet for lunch this past day. I'm a GWOT OEF and OIF vet myself. It was at Taco Bell. We talked about his current family situation because his wife and her friends are angry with whom he voted for, and one of my former soldier's sister whom was physically abused by her husband that we evac'ed to my house to be safe again.

No free meals, didn't even let anyone know we were vets. Just two friends meeting because we had the time.

And goofing off is an unsaid requirement in the mil. We've all done it. And those you think don't, just happen to hide it well so the troops won't see it after duty hours.

Thank you for your service, brother.

Rainy weather seems to be gone for now and it feels like a much cooler night is coming. I had to turn off both of my a/c . Been a pretty good day I took a long nap as usual. Got up at 3pm, I hope I sleep well tonight. I microwaved some frozen vegetables and fresh new potatoes and threw in a piece of smoked sausage, pretty good meal, I just wish the carrots would cook better in the microwave because they are a bit tough'
Watched an advertisement on air fryers and I think one of those would be perfect for me. I could basically cook anything I wanted and I do miss having a nice hamburger, haven't had a hamburger for at least 6 years. Before that I was cooking hamburgers at least 3 times a month. I was big on nice stews also, I really miss those since my crock pot retired. I will replace that and a new rice cooker this winter for sure.
Started watching the Houston Texans last night against the Lions and I lost interest and missed nothing because the Lions made a big comeback and beat Houston. Houston is my hometown but I also like the Lions because they have always been the team everyone wanted to beat up on. Today they aren't push overs and I would love to see the Lions win a super bowl before I croak. So now I think I will check the overnight weather and temps.

When I was a nike crewman I would catch gate guard duty every now and then so I would spend two days on duty as a gate guard on the launcher area. A nice little tiny shack that had a combo air and heater in the front window facing the road, a sliding door because the little shack was too small for a regular door. Winter time I would have the heater on full and I would stretch out on the floor and hang my head out the door staying nice and comfy. You have to understand it was long hours and I'm out in the middle of nowhere land center of Texas flat lands. Some days there was no cars passing the base at all. In summer we had a terrible time with skunks out chasing the lady skunks so guard duty at that time was not a happy event. You can't escape it due to the shear number of skunks out messing around. I need to upload the photos of the base and post them. I think I have enough space on flickr left. The base is still there almost like it was left but Texas Department of Highways did have the upper administration and radar area leased for several years for equipment maintenance. They did a lot of changing on the buildings that were once two small barracks and the orderly room is gone today and the little PX. On a good note a real estate broker bought the entire upper area and keeps it about like it was but he used the mess hall as a house and remodeled it a bit. The launcher area where I worked has had a couple leasers but no historical damage was done, one guy had a small house trailer on the elevator of my pit and he lived in that pit with the elevator still working of course. Some say he was growing mushrooms but I would be more apt to believe he was growing another type of weed. So he left and the area appears to now have a roach coach parking place because I saw trucks parked in front of the ready building and they looked like a roach coach truck. The fallout shelter that was used for any personnel caught about ground in case of a firing was equipped with a lead lined box that the people could all get into and would not have to worry about radiation. Our little console room was so small we could barely get into the room together and the Army was so thoughtful to supply us with rations for two weeks but the ass hole that did the planning forgot the bathroom facilities. I have always remembered what I thought to myself when I saw for the first time where I was expected to live for two weeks minimum without even a bucket to piss in. It was expected that if we had taken a near miss hit we had a good chance of coming out in two weeks. I don't know where we would have gone to, the top area up the highway would probably be a bunch of dead people. It was really a small gesture to place cases of C-Rations and no more.

Exactly the same here mate. Made me who I am today, for better or worse. 30 years of service near enough!

Miss quite a bit of it actually.

Thank both you and Fluff's services to our former masters.

All in good fun.

The TV remote is out of order, for whatever reason and the Internet provider just taxed me a nice 10€ for it going to the local shop in town in three-four days.

Funny thing is I’m not even upset about it, could have yelled at my TV or thrown the TV remote through the window but I take it as extra time and disconnect from all that.

Channel changers are almost critical equipment!

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and TV remotes weren't invented yet, my little brother changed channels for Mom. But we only got 2 channels back then so the job wasn't too demanding.

Ah, I’m probably a bit younger (sorry!) but do remember the early 90s and having about six channels. Back then we already had some crappy remotes but no Internet/Apps on the big flat screen like now.

Call me Neanderthal for this week, all good and I’ll keep busy differently. ;)

Made a rig on the Prusa printer to combine headlight with action camera.
AA Torche from Temu only a few $. Focuses, only high low modes.
I'll try and make a red lens cap out of some TPU so can stalk deer early morning.

Got an appointment with the dentist early this week, will need a dental crown but at least no cavity. Typically cost about 300€ but we’ll see how much I am reimbursed by the insurance. It’s the second time I need one, last time I only paid about 50€ on my own.

The TV remote issue is resolved, those greedy bastards wants me to send back the old one via a local shop, while I paid as I said above for a new one, as if it was my fault for defective material…

Also another benign issue: ordered vape products online and the totally incompetent French postal service “lost” it. Called them, visited the post office and it’s in Alsace? What the heck? They also charge 5€ for shipping…

Nothing of all this is really that dramatic but it’s just issues piling up and annoying me a bit.

I feel your pain with the dentist! (Crowns cost a lot more here - root canals are at least $1000)

My dentist is genuinely a good guy, and yeah as I said over the years here we are mostly well covered for health related things here.

Some people are confused. I meant that every time I saw my dentist she charged me enough to cover her monthly Mercedes payments. Or at least thats how it felt.
