Former Japanese Prime Minister Abe, one of his nation's most powerful and influential figures, died after being shot during a campaign speech Friday in western Japan.
Tetsuya Yamagami, who killed former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday, admitted that he originally planned to attack the leader of a religious group, the Kyodo news agency reported, citing police information.
The killer said he was angry at a "specific organization" he believed to be linked to Abe. Yamagami denies that he carried out the attack for political reasons.
The man believed the former Japanese prime minister was linked to a religious group he blamed for his mother's financial ruin and spent months planning the attack with a homemade gun, police told local media.
