I transcribed this from the book I just edited, Japan at War. Reprinted with permission of the author/publisher, Russ Arendel.

As a probationary officer, he was expected to project a positive attitude for his men. He does that well, but as sickness and starvation take more and more soldiers, his profound frustration begins to show. Apologies in advance if this is out of place in an images-oriented site.
