Thanks @Coffee - it's very good news. Finally something to fill the gap between RPG-7 and Spike ATGM in Polish Land Forces.

"Deliveries of the C-130H Hercules aircraft have started, which will increase the operational availability of the Polish Air Force's transport fleet . We will acquire 5 such machines in total." Also there are rumours that delivery will happen faster than it was previously planned.

Not sure if i posted about those rumours before,
"It seems that the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense @mblaszczak confirms what has been circulating as a rumor for some time that, in addition to the already purchased 250 M1A2SEPv3 tanks, we are to receive additional M1 tanks from one of the older versions."
Apparently they will be exUSMC M1A1 FEP or SA and ~300-350 of them. If true Poland will be 3rd largest user of M1

Another 10-11 AHS Krab and 4 Command Vehicles were delivered to Ukraine.
There are rumours that because of bottleneck at HSW with producing AHS Krab for Ukraine and Polish Army, NPBWP Borsuk and ZSSW-30 turret and other things at once MOD will buy K9(maybe even K9A2) and K-10 from South Korea(AHS Krab has polonized K9 chassis)

Poland-Korea Arms Deal Update

A lot of questions around the version of the FA-50 (probably multiple versions) With proposed Block 20 upgrades it could have useful capabilities, but could also be a Trojan Horse and transfer to Ukraine especially early shipments? That is PURE speculation.

I'm surprised about the purchase of the base K2 but nothing coming out of the Warsaw orderbook should be surprising these days.

ariusz Błaszczak, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, has confirmed the Polish Army's plans to purchase a military base in South Korea.
Three squadrons, i.e. 48 FA-50 Fighting Eagle aircraft manufactured by KAI (Korea Aerospace Industries), 180 combat tanks (Black Panther) manufactured by Hyundai Rotem, and an undisclosed number of K9 Thunder 155 mm self-propelled gunships from Hanwha Defense. The first FA-50s are expected to be delivered next year, according to the Ministry of Defence, and the first K2 tanks will be delivered this year, with the tanks eventually being produced in Poland.
According to the Minister, the contract for the purchase of 116 second-hand but still very effective Abrams has been concluded on very favourable terms. The combat value of the Abrams is at least twice or even three times higher than that of the T-72 tanks, said Mariusz Błaszczak. https://wpolityce.pl/polityka/60760...N0YTeuOGJu13ANrro_QwVM9eWOIR9lxc3TEbmFQg_KDjc

Do you know if PT-91s have been sent to Ukraine?

Do you know if PT-91s have been sent to Ukraine?
Yes, lt col Płatek said so in interview posted above(he said that K2s are to replace t-72 and pt-91 which were send to ukraine), but small number (<50), not like some tabloids (visegrad24) posted fake news about 232 PT-91s

A contract was signed today at the Ministry of National Defence headquarters at Klonowa 1, Warsaw, for Poland to purchase 180 K2 Heuk-Pyo (Black Panther), 48 K2 Thunder self-propelled guns and 48 FA-50 Fighting Eagle aircraft from South Korea.
In the first phase, 180 battle tanks are ordered for three battalions (with deliveries starting this year and ending in 2025), and in the second phase, 820 K2PL standard battle tanks are ordered for fourteen battalions, with series production starting in Poland in 2026.
The contract will also provide the manufacturer with a training and logistics package, ammunition and technical support.
In the first phase, 48 K9A1 self-propelled guns have been ordered for two squadrons, some of which will be delivered to Poland this year and completed next year.
In 2024, delivery of a further 624 self-propelled guns for twenty-six squadrons will start, initially in K9A1 standard, and from 2026 onwards they will be produced in Poland in K9PL (K9A2) standard with automatic loading system.

There has been some conflicting information regarding the FA-50. Initially it was said that the first 12 aircraft would be Block 10 versions. Then it was announced they would all be Block 20. Now we are back to Block 10, at least for the initial 12 copies, with some opacity regarding the radar installation, and the eventual capacity to carry AMRAAM missiles. But there are a lot of moving pieces in this unprecedented acquisition.

It appears that the K2PL will not have seven road wheels in a reinforced suspension to accommodate heavier side armour, certainly not in the first 180 vehicles. At least this would simplify transport and arterial issues associated with the M-1 series. I would assume the 120MM guns of the M1 and K2 are compatible, in at least basic ammunition, and I see that the intention is to transition to programmable ammo capability in the subsequent batches. This at least simplifies ammunition production and logistics as 125MM is officially dead soon.

All in all this makes sense, in fact, it is imperative unless Poland wants to rejoin a revamped Warsaw Pact. With things heating up in Asia, as well as Europe, kit will only become more difficult to source. It is possible that some of these early models may become bridging equipment for Ukraine as they incorporate additional Western systems into their military.

The service center for the aircraft makes sense especially if Korea can make additional inroads into the European market perhaps in the Baltics and Balkans, although the Croat ship seems to have sailed. I did not see any concrete plans for investment in new manufacturing capacity, although it is early in the game.

This truly is a huge development that would have been impossible before February. Poland has woken up to the fact that the U.S. is going to have it's hands full in Asia, amongst other challenges at home and abroad, and that it needs to be able to take care of itself. I also believe that this message was delivered to them rather emphatically and directly by the U.S., though evidently discreetly. Poland is, and should be, wary of being saved by some of the traditional European powers that have allowed their military capacity to atrophy to the point that it will take many years to rebuild. These other countries also have different priorities and might be willing to cut Eastern Europe loose in a pinch. Their best bet will be to forge commonality with their near abroad now, including Finland and of course Ukraine. The union of these nations economically and demographically puts them on somewhat even footing with Russia, except, of course, for the elephant in the room.

As to whether these plans eventually come to total fruition, I have some doubts, but I have am certain that at least the initial shipments will go forward as announced because they have to.

K2PL Drawings

I saw the recovery vehicle as well over at Sturgeon's House Forum under "Kimchi Armoured Vehicles"

It will be a huge boost for Poland if the plans ever come to fruition.

On August 26, 2022 in Morąg, the ceremony of signing executive contracts related to the purchase from the South Korean side of the first 180 K2 Heuk-Pyo tanks (Black Panther) and 212 K9A1 Thunder self-propelled howitzers was held.

FUEtFEmX0AAh5_m.jpg

The K2PL version, which is to be produced in Poland from 2026, will be amended to fully adapt to national requirements. This applies, inter alia, to strengthening the interior protection through additional armor, it is also planned to use active hard-kill and soft-kill protection systems (physically destroying anti-tank missiles and disrupting their guidance systems). The entire program will be accompanied by a large-scale technology transfer.
It is also assumed that the K2 vehicles ordered in the first phase will be upgraded to the K2PL version. Along with the purchase of Korean tanks, the service potential for current service should be established in Poland in the first stage, and the industrial potential for the production of K2PL vehicles in the second stage. The implementation of the purchase of K2PL tanks is in practice the implementation of the project to acquire tanks code-named "Wilk" ("Wolf" in English), which was launched in May 2017. According to earlier plans (before the war in Ukraine), only 120 vehicles were to be delivered by 2035.

The second contract concerns 212 K9A1 self-propelled howitzers, manufactured by Hanwha Defense. As in the case of tanks, the contract covers howitzers, a training and logistics package and a large amount of ammunition, but does not include accompanying vehicles. However, the howitzers will be equipped with Polish means of internal and external communication and integrated with the "Topaz" Automated Fire Control Kit, which is intended to allow them to use Polish command vehicles, including those used today in "Regina" fire modules with Krab howitzers.

The first soldiers from the 16th Mechanized Division will be trained in the Republic of Korea in October, and the first tanks and howitzers will be delivered to the 16th Division in 2022. These are K2 tanks for the 20th Mechanized Brigade in Morąg and K9A1 howitzers for the 11th "Mazurski" Artillery Regiment in Węgorzewo.
