Isles-class trawler HMS Skye 6 days after commissioning
Bangor-class minesweeper HMS Guysborough (J52) underway, coastal waters. Loaned to the RCN on commissioning
17 Mar 1945. Minesweeper HMCS Guysborough was torpedoed and sunk by U.868 in the eastern Bay of Biscay while sailing from Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, to Plymouth after refit. The first torpedo struck her at 18:50 in the stern but prompt damage control kept the ship afloat.
However she was hit amidships at 19:35 by a second torpedo and sank after 30 minutes. The boats were unusable and the survivors had to take to floats. Rescue ships did not arrive until late on the following day, by which time 51 of 92 men on the rafts had died of exposure.
Japan:
Lead destroyer of the class Shimakaze. 5 May 1943
She was attacked by American aircraft from Task Force 38 on 11 November 1944 during the Battle of Ormoc Bay, and disabled by strafing and near misses early in the attack. She drifted and burned for several hours before exploding and sinking. A total of 131 survivors were rescued, but this total also included crewmen from Wakatsuki, so the total from Shimakaze is unknown
