7th Oct 1973, during NATO Exercise Swift Move in Norwegian and North Sea waters, Project 61 (NATO Kashin) class destroyer Smely (252) whilst manoeuvring in close proximity to Centaur class aircraft carrier HMS Hermes (R12) had a fire in his engine room that spread near the 533 mm torpedo launcher. The commander of the Smely, to avoid a possible detonation of the torpedoes due to overheating, decided to fire the most affected torpedo, evidently deactivated, but close to the NATO ships.
Faced with this emergency situation, the commander of the USS Newport News (CA-148) offered to help extinguish the fire and thus avoid further damage, an offer that the Soviets politely rejected.
