Submarine Balilla
The interwar Italian submarines (in which the Balilla-class was the first class of ocean-going submarines, being laid down in 1925) had as a prominent feature large superstructures, with tall support columns for its periscopes, as they were largely meant to operate and attack while submerged; also, the huge superstructures offered plenty of space for habitability, as showers and toilets were placed there.
German submariners, upon inspecting some of them in 1940, were reportedly shocked. As these superstructures contributed to the long diving times (120 seconds for the larger ocean-going submarines), they would be cut down into German-style ones during drydock times, in wartime.
