Fires burn on the forward flight deck of USS Saratoga (CV-3) after she was hit by several Kamikazes off Iwo Jima - February 21, 1945
123 crew were killed and 192 wounded in the attack. Three hours later the fires were under control and Saratoga was able to recover six fighters despite her heavily damaged forward flight deck. Sailing for Bremerton for repairs she arrived there on March 16, 1945.
Sadly Saratoga’s career as a front line carrier were at an end because of her age and the number of newer carriers in service. The USN decided to modify her into a training carrier.
Designated as a target during nuclear testing in Operation Crossroads, Saratoga sank after Test Baker on July 25, 1946
