Five dead from so-called Polenböller (sorry, @Musashi) is actually a good average for a German New Year's Eve. Guys playing with fireworks from sketchy sources is a long-standing tradition in these parts. Have had many of those dumbarses in the back of my ambulance.
Can't say I sympathise, to be honest. FAFO.
A recent trend is buying powerful professional pyrotechnics from sketchy Chinese vendors. They have fuses which appear to be long but burn through rapidly, so people make the mistake of holding them in their hands for too long. I wasn't on call this year, but in 2023 I saw no fewer than three (partially) amputated hands.
