Photos Crisis In Libya

The are very conflicting reports coming out of Russia when it comes to the fate of Syria. Plus, I have to admit that I didn't understand Russian objectives over there from the get go.

As far as I can tell, Russian objectives in Syria are:

1) Have a warm water port.

2) Keep Assad in power to have a warm water port.

It is not Tulpar but MTLB based arty command vehicle that was adopt as improvised IFV.

For what they need warm watter port? They do not need Tartus as trade port, and at same time they do not have any significant Navy. Sevastopol on other hand was and is great port, and shipyard in Crimea are very important for future navy needs.

IMHO main reason was to distract attention from Ukraina.

Crimea requires the easily closed Bosphorus Straits to remain open.

Not a bad idea - why are countries scrapping over Libya? It doesn't have huge oil reserves does it, and we don't need oil....at the moment??

Okay, Syria makes sense for a multitude of reasons.

But why Libya of all places? It's little more than a desert lab for testing unproven weaponry.

Does this possibly have anything to do with that little spat that Medvedev and Putin had in 2011 (when he still had some autonomy)?

Medvedev rejects Putin 'crusade' remark over Libya
The rare rebuke came after Mr Putin said the resolution resembled "medieval calls for crusades".

Mr Medvedev said such comments could "lead to a clash of civilisations".

The UN resolution, which Russia abstained from voting on, authorised military action in Libya to protect civilians from pro-Gaddafi forces.

Mr Medvedev told Russian news agencies: "Under no circumstances is it acceptable to use expressions which essentially lead to a clash of civilisations, such as 'crusade' and so on.

"It is unacceptable. Otherwise, everything may end up much worse compared to what's going on now."

Mr Putin had said UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which was adopted on Thursday, was "defective and flawed" as it "allows for everything".

Who knew that Medvedev was proven right nine years late.

Funny you should mention that:

Turkish Petroleum seeking Libya exploration permit -Anadolu
ISTANBUL, May 14 (Reuters) - Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) has applied to Libya for an exploration permit in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported on Thursday.

Exploration will begin as soon as the process is completed. Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez was quoted as saying.

He made the comments during a summit on Wednesday, Anadolu reported.

Not stating that this is the prime reason, but it is certainly a beneficial byproduct of involvement.

I think this article helps:

Yes. So? Tartus as commercial port need that as well or even worse need land conections long several thousands miles through Turkey and Georgia/Azerbaijan or Iran. Tartus is not useful for Russia as commercial port.

Oh, I don't know. It seems the Russians, really, really, REALLY like having a Mediterranean port where their ships can replenish and repair, without needing to go back through the Black Sea.

Yes, but they had Tartus as naval replenish point even before they get involved in that mess. Their base in Tartus was founded in Soviet time, and they started to upgrading in before civil war in Syria started.

Anyway Russia is trying hard to be acknowledged as power, and as others refuse to recognize Russia as power only way to achieve that is to act with power.
For that you need playground and Syria managed to become playground for powers. Russia have no manners to act like power in lets say Denmark or Jordan. But as long as major players will not accept Russia as one of them ( major powers) Russia will continue to fight for that status. I find that west policies toward Russia is actually very bad... but who am I to judge....

Egypt announced an international alliance that includes Greece, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates and France to confront Turkish provocative moves in Libya and the Mediterranean.

..
he alliance statement also criticized Turkish actions in Libya, and the memorandum of understanding on the delineation of maritime borders in the Mediterranean and the understanding on security and military cooperation, both signed in November 2019 between Turkey and the internationally recognized Tripoli-based Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) headed by Fayez al-Sarraj.

On May 14, the Turkish Petroleum Corporation submitted a request to the GNA to obtain permission to start exploration in the eastern side of the Mediterranean. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also discussed with Sarraj May 17 the executive steps of the above-mentioned memorandum.

The anti-Turkey alliance also condemned the ongoing war in Libya and the Turkish military support for the GNA, calling on Turkey to stop the flow of foreign fighters from Syria to Libya.
