Nimrod R1s, were always referred to as R1s. But officially they didn't exist. None of the others have ever been known as R1s. Just Shadows, Sentinels, etc....

I know that mate. What I meant was in service no one would say "I'm posted to R1s" meaning they were posted to Sentinel. They say "I'm posted to Sentinels".....I'm not talking about the RAF official designator.
oh, probably because there is only one version in use, if you said you were posted to nimbods, most would think of the MR2, as the R1 never existed....

Glad to see that the quality of uniforms hasn't improved in the years since I've left. Maybe the Royal Marines moving to Crye kit isn't such a waste of money after all ;)
