Nui Dat, South Vietnam. January 1970. Vocalist Julie Lewis, on stage, backed by the ABC Dance Band, helped make Christmas and New Year brighter for soldiers who came in their hundreds to Luscombe Bowl at 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Base. Julie was one of two female entertainers in the Army and Australian Forces Overseas Fund sponsored concert party.

Nui Dat, South Vietnam. January 1970. Troops from the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) Base crowded the Luscombe Bowl to hear the Army and Australian Forces Overseas Fund sponsored concert party. Julie Lewis, one of two female entertainers, on stage, sings to troops with backing from the ABC Dance Band. The concert party visited the war zone over Christmas and New Year and played to capacity audiences at all its shows.

The show was rated tops by hundreds of off-duty troops who packed the bowl.

'Pathfinder' Corporal Ivan Sinclair of Dorrigo, NSW, directs the landing of Iroquois helicopters onto the Luscombe airfield at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) base. The choppers were about to lift 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) troops into the Long Hai Hills to the south for the beginning of Operation Pinnaroo.

His unit, the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) is working with other 1ATF elements in the search of the treacherous Long Hai Hills in southern Phuoc Tuy Province.

Commanding Officer of the 9th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (9RAR), Lieutenant Colonel A. L. Morrison (left), and Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), Lieutenant Colonel J. J. Shelton, enjoy a drink before 3RAR left for Australia. The advance party of 150 from 9RAR had settled at Nui Dat and had prepared the way for the remainder of the battalion. 3RAR was due to return to Australia for Christmas.

Jim Shelton only just died a little while ago. Managed to watch the Coral Balmoral ceremony from his hospital bed, where they finally got their long overdue Unit Citation for Gallantry, then died in the afternoon.
Alby Morrison was a good man from all accounts, his son is a flog though, doubt we've had a worse Chief of Army.
