ore than 100 former state employees have been executed without trial in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in August last year, according to an internal UN report obtained by the DPA news agency.

In more than two-thirds of the cases, the killings were carried out by people in the authorities or groups close to the leadership. In many cases, jihadists from the Islamic State terrorist organisation are suspected to have been involved.

The internal report was prepared in the office of UN Secretary-General António Guterres for the Security Council.

The document says that a number of human rights activists and journalists have been attacked or harassed in recent months, including some who have been unlawfully detained or abused. According to UN information, eight activists and two press workers have been killed by the Taliban, Islamist gunmen or other unknown assailants.

Guterres said in the report that the social and economic difficulties in Afghanistan could only be overcome if the Taliban leadership was not isolated by the international community. It is essential to establish a constructive dialogue with the country's de facto leaders, he stressed.

Danes are very good at extracting people & inquires have already been made on behalf of citizens of well known western Countries that have gone on record by their President that they will not mount a military extraction for any of their citizens left behind in the Ukraine if fighting breaks out. Nice & so much for “Civis Romanus sum”.

Can't make anything up as you go along when you're not even aware what is going on.

And please stop posting in Latin. The most popular president ever has enough problems already with comprehending English.

US government action on US-held Afghan foreign reserves:

Some people will have very strong feelings about this, particularly around half the money going to 9/11 victims, families, first responders.

I‘m sympathetic, but also aware of the extraordinary amount of US government money that has already gone to the 9/11 victims, families, and first responders already.

It’s another $1.1 million per fatality(average), after approx $3 million per fatality(average) has already been distributed.

An argument could be made that with so many hundreds of billions wasted, the US deserves to hold it back.

That argument is valid, if also seemingly vindictive.

And it’s that seeming vindictiveness, rather than Realpolitik, that will cause damage.

The US Dollar is the global reserve currency, and maintaining that extraordinary privilege requires trust.

Every time the US does things like this it reduces trust in the US, the US Dollar, and the US led SWIFT inter-banking system.

If we lose the US Dollar as global reserve currency, we will lose everything.

This alone will not cause it, but it is #XXX in Death By 1000 Cuts.

I can usually see a legal case in black or white, right or wrong but I can see both the terrorism victims rights to the reserve as well as the Afghan people [who for them it's a life & death if their don't get aid asap]. In a perfect world it would be cool if the victims said we have enuf money & the Afghan children need it worse. I think the US President Biden likes playing God. There are ways of getting aid directly to the Afghan people without the taliban getting their hands on it.

Exactly.

This choice just looks like lose, lose, lose all around.
