Fletcher-class destroyer USS Brownson (DD-518) at the New York Navy Yard, 27 April 1943. Shortly after commissioning in Feb
p9xk8kr2ckzc1.jpg

On 26 December 1943, Brownson departed Cape Cretin in company with Hutchins, Beale (DD-471), and Daly (DD-519), and began escorting the fleet tug Sonoma (AT-12) and seven tank landing ships to Borgen Bay while screening the landings on Cape Gloucester, New Britain as part of Operation Backhander.

At approximately 14:42, 26 December 1943, Brownson was hit by two bombs from a Japanese Aichi D3A Type 99 carrier dive bomber. The bombs struck to starboard of the centerline, near number two stack. A tremendous explosion followed, and the entire structure above the main deck as well as the deck plating, was gone. The ship listed 10 to 15 degrees to starboard, and settled rapidly amidships with the bow and stern canted upward.

The wounded were placed in rafts and at 14:50, the order was given by Lt. Cmdr. Maher to abandon ship. The amidships section was entirely underwater at that time. There was a single ripple like a depth charge explosion and the ship sank at 14:59. Brownson suffered the loss of 108 out of 336 of her crew. The remainder were rescued by USS Daly and USS Lamson.

Japan:
Lead destroyer of her class Akizuki during sea trials in December of 1942. Compared to previous Japanese destroyers, the Akizuki class were larger, more well-rounded destroyers. Though only carrying one torpedo launcher (a quadruple launcher), they made up for this with eight 10 cm/65 Type 98 guns in four twin mounts. These guns, though not as powerful as earlier 12.7cm guns in the anti-surface role, were extremely effective anti-aircraft weapons. They combined a high rate of fire, exceptional accuracy, and very fast train/elevation rates to produce Japan's most capable naval anti-aircraft gun.

Muskö naval base, Destroyer HMS Sodermanland is entering one of the openings to the naval base. The construction of the base started in 1950 and was completed 19 years later in 1969. During the construction about 1.5 million tons of rock were removed. It has 3 docks, originally designed for destroyers and submarines. The underground base itself has an area of several km²[*citation needed*] and is connected by 20 km (12 mi) of underground roads.
