I've never heard of such a thing before........can you explain more please?? "Kidney disease"???
Well, if you sit on the cold ground for a long time, you can get fever and several diseases. One of them is problem with kidneys, if they get cold (pardon me, I don`t know proper medical terms) they work ineffectively. That`s why one uses insulation karrimat or similar stuff - not for comfort, but for health. And if you want to sit somewhere that is cold and/or wet place, and you want to spare your health, you use such a seat. Just like here, for example:

OH.....I'd never heard that!! Thanks for the info Chris O`Crooh I seem to know plenty of chaps who have sat on the cold ground or on cold things and never complained of kidney troubles so this whole discussion is all new to me. Thanks again for posting!! (Y)

My pleasure!!
I think some UK yompers would consider such a seat is a good idea, while they go for deployment to Norway - for example.

?? Legion.

Quite a numer of American veterans in it too, also British and Australian. Their policy of taking exclusively soldiers ( except for medical staff ) hasn't changed so far, since far more people want to join than them losing any.
