Sailboat Collides With French Aircraft Carrier Charles De Gaulle
The French Navy announced that a sailboat collided with aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle this morning. No injuries were reported, damages are limited to the sailboat which dismasted
According to the Maritime Prefecture of the Mediterranean (Préfecture Maritime de la Méditerranée), the flagship of the French Navy (Marine Nationale), aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, was at sea for training off Toulon naval base when the collision occurred with a 10 meters-long sailboat flying the flag of Poland:
While on a training sortie off Toulon, the Charles de Gaulle was late to detect a ten-metre sailing boat (flying a Polish flag) at a very short distance, shortly before 07:30 AM. In spite of an emergency manoeuvre to avoid this sailboat and in the absence of reaction from the latter, a collision occurred around 07:30 AM between the sailboat and the hull of the Charles de Gaulle.
Several actions were undertaken in order to rescue possible victims on board the sailboat: a radio contact was established with the skipper and an assistance team was sent by the Charles de Gaulle to the sailboat. These actions confirmed that there was only a single person aboard the sailboat and the sailboat was not taking water (damages were limited to the loss of the mast during the collision).
Two boats from the Charles de Gaulle were used to secure the sailboat and prepare its towing, in difficult weather conditions (sea state 4, 25 knots of wind).
At the same time the Mediterranean Operations Centre located in Toulon ordered the diversion of a tugboat in order to tow the sailboat to the port of Hyères. A technical investigation is underway, as is systematically done after an incident at sea involving a French Navy vessel. This collision has no impact on the training activities of the Charles de Gaulle.

HMS Martin underway. date unknown

HMS Martin was an M-class destroyer launched at the Tyneside yard of Vickers-Armstrongs on 12 December 1940. She had a busy but brief wartime career, being sunk by the German submarine U-431 on 10 November 1942 off Algiers.
Martin was allocated to the escort group for Force "H" in Operation “Torch”, the landings in North Africa. She sailed from Scapa Flow on 30 October as part of the escort for Force "H", and after fuelling at Gibraltar on 5 November re-joined Force "H"- the covering force to the landings at Algiers and Oran, on 8 November. The task of Force "H" was to guard against action by the Italian fleet, during the landings. Martin was torpedoed by U-431 under command of Wilhelm Dommes on the morning of 10 November as a result of which she blew up and sank in position 37°53′N 003°57′E. The only survivors were five officers and 59 ratings picked up by the destroyer Quentin.

Built as part of the Hunt class third group, Haydon would initially serve as a convoy escort in the Atlantic. In 1943 she would be redeployed to the Mediterranean to assist in the Allied Landings at Sicily and Southern France before being put back on convoy protection duty.

She would be pulled from service in 1947 due to a fire on board and eventually disposed of in 1958.
