3787166 Trooper Ross Alan Porter, 1st Armoured Personnel Carrier Squadron - 215419 Corporal David William Davies' driver, picking up 6 RAR just prior to Battle of Long Tan, July 1966. Davies served with 1st Armoured Personnel Carrier Squadron (May-December 1966) and A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment (January-April 1967). He served a later tour as a Temporary Sergeant with B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment from December 1969 - June 19

VIETNAM. 1966-08-19. ARMOURED PERSONNEL CARRIER COMMAND, LANCE CORPORAL REX WARREN OF NORWOOD, ADELAIDE, SA, KEEPS AN EYE OPEN FOR VIET CONG AS HIS HEAVY VEHICLE MOVES THROUGH A RUBBER PLANTATION. REX AND HIS CREW WERE AMONG TROOPS WHO SWEPT THROUGH THE AREA IN SEARCH OF THE ENEMY AFTER A BITTER BATTLE AT LONG TAN, IN WHICH 250 VIET CONG WERE KILLED.

The chase followed a savage battle at Long Tan in which members of 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), APCs and artillery fire killed 250 enemy soldiers.

THE ENEMY WERE RETREATING AFTER LOSING 250 MEN IN A BITTER BATTLE WITH THE AUSTRALIAN FORCE AT LONG TAN, IN PHUOC TUY PROVINCE DURING OPERATION SMITHFIELD. THE SEARCHING AUSTRALIANS FOUND HASTILY DUG GRAVES AND OTHER EVIDENCE OF THE LARGE SCALE VC RETREAT.

Vietnam. 1966-08-19. Private Brian Wood of Toowoomba, Qld, carrying an M60 machine gun, was among soldiers of the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), who decimated and pursued the Viet Cong after a bitter battle at Long Tan, in Phuoc Tuy Province, part of Operation Smithfield. In follow-up sweeps the Diggers discovered graves and signs of a hasty retreat by the large Viet Cong force.

Vietnam. 1966-08-19. 22900 Warrant Officer 2 John (Jack) Roughley of Oxley, Brisbane, Qld, contacts his platoon headquarters from an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) sweeping after retreating Viet Cong (VC). The pursuit followed a crushing defeat of the enemy at Long Tan, in Phuoc Tuy Province. The 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), and supporting elements destroyed 250 VC in the battle during Operation Smithfield.

Vung Tau, Vietnam. 1966-08-26. Private Barry (Custard) Mellor, 11 Platoon, survivor of the Battle of Long Tan lying in a hospital bed with a bullet wound to his cheek and leg and a cigarette in his hand. Mellor was found leaning against a rubber tree, by Delta Company, the 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR), on its return, twelve hours later.
