The French Gendarmerie Nationale has the well-known "PGHM - Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne" , responsible for high altitude mountain rescue, but many people ignore the existence of the "PGM - Peloton de Gendarmerie de Montagne". This unit is responsible for mountain rescue in the low mountain ranges.

Where as the PGHM is working in all the French Alpine Massifs, the Pyrenees, Corsica and the "Réunion" territory, the PGM is in charge of the Vosges, Jura and Massif Central low mountain ranges.
