The Soviet 54th Division attacked the Kuhmo area on Nov 30 1939 but was stopped there by Task Force Ilomäki and Brigade Vuokko. ’Til the mid-January 1940 the Division was jamming along the road Rasti Crossroads-Riihivaara village, having entrenched relatively well.
So when the 44th ’Blue’ Division was defeated in the Raate Road Battle in Jan 1-9 the HQ of the Northern Finland Corps suggested that the victorius 9th Division should be re-positioned to Kuhmo. Supreme HQ agreed on Jan 18.
So, on Jan 20 Infantry Regiments 27, 2nd and 3rd Battalions from the Infantry Regiment 65, Light Detachment Volanen, an AT Company, two field artillery platoons from Field Artillery Regiment 9, Signaler Battalion 9 and Combat Engineer Battalion 9 were about to reach the area, arriving there on Jan 21-26. Also the Separate Battalion 21 was positioned the area on Jan 27.
Recon patrols were sent to the Kälkäinen-Loso-Reuhkavaara and Nivala-Luelahti areas. Based on their reports the Division HQ decided to point the spearhead towards the Saunajärvi village, that cutting the Soviet routes eastwards. Division was ordered to keep the village and continue assaulting along the road towards the Sivakka village in the west. D-Day was set to be Jan 29 at 5 AM.
Basically, the same tactic was successfully used in Raate but in Kuhmo the enemy had prepared the defense better, having e.g. calculated artillery blockades and 3-log layer thick dugouts for the infantry.
Meanwhile, in the Ladoga Karelia, the 12th Division was preparing to wipe out the Soviet 18th Division in the Lemetti area. Pic shows an MG nest from there. Gunner might be Edvin Kallio and his assistant Onni Valkonen.

Continuation War, Finland.
Corporal Vaskelainen, tank destroyer.
Caption tells that corporal Vaskelainen stopped five enemy tanks from this position with his "elephant-gun" (Lahti L-39). If looking closely at the pics from the road, a road in "no-mans land", there are 3-4 tanks visible. Last pics perhaps shows one of the knocked out tanks, date and place are the same. On the 71st day of the Winter War, Feb 8 1940, three pilots were preparing to take off from the Trollhättan, Sweden, where those future Finnish Fiat G.50 "Freccia"s FA-3-19 were assembled. Finland bought 25 interceptors from Italy on Oct 23 1939.
Two of the pilots were Hungarian volunteers, 2nd Lt. Wilhelm Békássy and Lt. Mathias Pirithy, and the 3rd Finnish Lt. Kauko Linnamaa. Linnamaa's aircraft suffered engine failure and didn't start, so Hungarians headed to Finland. For some reason they got separated and Pirithy returned the base. Békássy was last spotted over the Svenska Högarna lighthouse flying south-east.
At first the Finns thought he had switched sides but since the Soviet propaganda didn't mention anything the conclusion was that he just misoriented and sank to the Baltic Sea. Pics show some Fiat being maintenanced at the Pyhäniemi airbase on March 13 1940 and in the Rautu airfield on Sep 3 1942.

Although Sweden was...and still is...a "neutral" country, its armed forces were well-equipped for defensive purposes during WW2 and its armaments industry produced a range of weapons which were successfully exported to and used by the warring nations.
Here, Swedish troops on winter exercises practise with a Bofors 37 mm Pansarvärnskanon M/38...a successful design which saw service with both allied and axis forces.

At least 33 enemy bombers raided the town of Kajaani on the 7th of February 1940, killing four civilians. The hospital was severely damaged. Several spies parachuted the area, too, but were caught.
Correct me if I'm wrong when saying that the Soviet RRAB incendiary bombs were taken in use in Feb 1940. Photos are dated Feb 8.

Today 81 years ago on the 70th day of the Winter War, on Feb 7 1940, the Finnish Separate Battalion 25 updates its war journal:
"3rd Company informed at 1.20 AM that the enemy attacked in the Uurasvaara-Hatajavaara valley pushing the Company back. 1st Company and the rest of the 2nd were ordered to counterattack, the 2nd should flank while the 1st assaults. Meanwhile, the leader of the 3rd Company had reacted, managing to re-capture the positions. Counterattack was aborted. A light squad and three Swedish volunteers commanded by Swedish 2nd Lt. Bäver was sent to recon the enemy positions near the Märkäjärvi village, along the Kuusamo road, at 8 AM. Returning at 4.40 PM they informed that no changes were spotted among the enemy positions and at least three Soviets were killed when engaged by their patrol."
The participation of three Swedish volunteers indicates that the Swedish Volunteer Corps (Svenska Frivilligkåren, SFK) was preparing to man the lines there (which would take place on Feb 28).
In the pic we see a Finnish patrol advancing in the area on Feb 21.
