Belgium, 1945, at 22 Advanced Base Workshop Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Although most of the tanks are Churchills, two Comets have snuck in too. The Advanced Base Workshop could carry out in depth overhaul and repair of both complete vehicles and defective parts.

I had a Joe Biden moment and pasted the wrong caption, it should be:

home-guard.jpeg

Members of the New Zealand Home Guard on parade, ?1942. If these lads are representative, this really was a "Dad's Army". New Zealand raised a local defence force to face the threat of invasion by the Japanese. As the war progressed, and this threat was beaten back, the force was more or less allowed to fade away. This is in contrast to the British Home Guard, which was developed from a "Dad's Army" into pre-enlistment training force for young men destined for the Army.

The bombing of Zürich on 4 March 1945 by USAAF bombers was one of several bombing raids that targeted Swiss cities, mistaking them for their targets in Germany.

In this particular raid: "Six USAAF B-24H bombers hit Zürich with 12.5 tons of high explosives and 12 tons of incendiaries, killing five people. The intended target had been Aschaffenburg near Frankfurt am Main (290 km (180 mi) north). The six bombers had gone off course, and their crews believed they were bombing Freiburg im Breisgau. At virtually the same time, other bombers dropped 12.5 tons of high explosives and five tons of incendiaries on Basel." -via Jonathan E. Helmreich's Diplomacy of Apology.

Swiss EKW D-3801 in flight. Date unknown but almost certainly during WW2.
The EKW D-3801 goes by another name: the Morane-Saulnier MS.412, although they are not quite the same aircraft. The D-3801 was a further modification of the French Morane-Saulnier MS.406 line that switched the original engine to the more powerful Hispano-Suiza 12Y-51, as well as changing the armament to 4x 7.5mm belt-fed machine guns in the wings as opposed to the 2x 7.5mm drum-fed ones the original design had, which had issues with freezing while at altitude. This also had the added benefit of eliminating the bulges on the wings where the guns were. The propeller hub-mounted HS.404 20mm cannon was also changed to a local modification of the same design, which had a slightly higher rate of fire and muzzle velocity than the French version.
Additionally, a simple fixed radiator was used instead of the more complex retractable type, and the radio antenna was moved in front of the windshield as opposed to jutting out from the bottom of the plane as it did on the MS.406. With these modifications, the EKW D-3801 was 23mph (37kph) faster than the MS.406 and had a better climb rate.
207 of these aircraft were produced in total in Switzerland. They were used as a front-line fighter, which made it a vital contributor to the defense of Swiss airspace during World War II. After the war, they continued to be used as training aircraft and as target tugs until finally retiring in 1959.
