After their unit landed in the middle of a Viet Cong staging area, medic Pfc. Andrew J. Brown of Chicago draws his pistol while protecting a wounded U.S. paratrooper from sniper fire in the jungle near Thuong Lang, about 10 miles northeast of Bien Hoa, June 24, 1965. On 7 February 1967, Company “A”, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) on Operation “Thayer II”, conducted a search and destroy mission against the Viet Cong in the An Lao Valley approximately 400 miles Northeast of Saigon, Republic of Vietnam. Members of the company return to their base camp with Viet Cong prisoners captured in mountain caves.
