Is this the first carrier named after an enlisted sailor rather than an officer?
Carriers are traditionally named for historic American battles or Presidents-except for Enterprise, which is a carrier name tradition in and of itself. Destroyers are traditionally named after Navy heroes.

Thanks, I actually ended up having a dig through wikipedia and it turns out I managed to confuse myself. I knew Chester Nimitz was an admiral so I then assumed that John C Stennis and Carl Vinson were too, whereas they were politicians with connections to the Navy.

C'mon now. Yes their main guns have no rounds. But the still can be armed with;

20 × MK 57 VLS modules, 4 cells per, 80 launch cells total[8]
RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM), 4 per cell
Tactical Tomahawk, 1 per cell
Vertical Launch Anti-Submarine Missile (ASROC), 1 per cell

It can hold 80+ missiles, but the guns have no ammo. Not sure why the Navy decided to place a gun on a ship that has no ammo.

The rounds for the guns are astronomical in cost....

The two 155mm guns of the Advanced Gun System on the Zumwalt, intended to strike targets farther than 80 miles away, are ridiculously expensive to fire, as a single Long Range Land Attack Projectile costs almost $1 million. Procurement was shut down two years ago, leaving the Zumwalt without any ammunition to fire.

Yeah, I get that, but not sure why the Navy with all its planning for the future would mount a weapon system that was not fully tested or procured. Handsome ship, however.

Maybe Donald Rumsfeld, a.k.a Rummy the dummy, has an answer. He was Sec. of Defense when many of these systems were being developed. He really pushed these hi-tech untested weapons. And then enter the Obama administration who did very little to improve the US Military as a whole.
