S.S. United States and S.S. America at New York Harbor – April 7, 1963
On April 7, 1963, the S.S. United States and S.S. America, two of the most iconic ocean liners of the United States Lines, were together in New York Harbor. The S.S. United States, launched in 1952, was the fastest ocean liner ever built, holding the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing. The S.S. America, launched in 1939, was her older fleetmate, known for her elegant design and long service career.
At the time, both ships were still active, serving as symbols of American maritime power in the golden age of ocean travel. While the S.S. United States continued her record-breaking transatlantic crossings, the S.S. America operated as a more leisurely liner. Their presence together in New York Harbor marked an era when American liners were still a dominant force in passenger travel.
