Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon is to make a statement to MPs on Thursday about the deployment of British troops in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence says.
Mr Hoon will make the announcement in the House of Commons at about 1315 BST.
The MoD says he will give details of adjustments to numbers of troops in the area of Iraq under British control.
There has been speculation 3,000 extra troops could be sent, but sources say the statement will involve only "a few hundred extra troops".
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said any extra troops would only be sent to the area of southern Iraq already under British control: "They are going nowhere else," he added.
