The Ministry of Defence says it is investigating an incident in Basra in which there are believed to have been some British casualties.
Three British soldiers were involved but a spokesman could not yet confirm whether they are dead or alive.
There are unconfirmed reports there was an explosion and one soldier is dead.
The news came shortly after the Iraqi foreign minister said the handover of power in Iraq was brought forward from 30 June to Monday.
