Some rando rusty old Mauser is one thing, but a great many of these photos show people carrying what was current at the time. Or near enough as matters.

yanks sent stuff, Russia/Libya sent stuff, I dont know how we know this is Australian, I'd have thought it was locally stolen somehow?

Given the ubiquity of the FAL pattern worldwide at that time, could be from so many sources. (edit: Including the US civilian market actually.)
