Cool, the dog in the second last pic seems to be a "Gos d'Atura Català"!!! I had one of these, great breed! I didn't now they were used for mountain rescue work.

Gos d´atura and other Spanish shepherd dogs are originary from the Pyrenees, so they must be acclimated to high mountain conditions.

For rescue and police works, an important requirement for dogs is to be smart, and shepherd dogs use to be quite intelligent.

Neither did I know that this breed were used to this purpose, but I am not suprised by this.

It's Colonel Hurley E. Fuller, he commanded the 110th Infantry of the 28th Division in the Battle of the Bulge. He sacrified his Regiment in order to slow down the attacking German 5. Panzer Armee. Being outnumbered 1 to 10, his Regiment was destroyed in the first four days of the German counterattack.

Neither the 110th, nor Col. Fuller, never received any official recognition for their bravery on the "Skyline Drive". "Skyline Drive" is the name the GI's had given to the N7 highway, running up from Diekirch to Saint Vith, the road along which the Americans had put up their main line of defense.

What you say makes sense Mokordo......my "Suela" was extremely sharp, never had a dog that showed such an accute situational awareness, even better than all the hunting dogs I had over the years.

I have a mix between a dog and a pig, that is so silly that he never would be a police/rescue dog, but I like him:

Sometimes he thinks he is a goat also, as you can see.
