@Mokordo, please meet Willie, General George S. Patton's mix between a dog and a pig. He may not have been very bright but was entitled to wear an Army dog tag.
Just saw this again in the "Women in uniform" thread. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that this is not a real K-9 unit but that they used some random dog for this photo contest. The dog is obviously feeling uncomfortable being hugged by a strange human. This would not be the case if it was a K-9 cuddling with its handler.
Casualty dogs were trained to find wounded soldiers, they carried a bag of medical supplies that might help in treating wounds, and gave dying soldiers comfort. They were specially trained to cope with the chaos of battle . Here a soldier bandages the paw of a dog working in Flanders Fields

Unfortunately, the short clip is only in Russian with no subtitles. One of the Ukrainian soldiers serves at the front line with his companion "Don", a great cane corso. According to the trooper, this dog has one special skill, he can hear low flying UAVs and wakes everyone up if he does. The one thing this handsome Italian boy can't get accustomed is winter in Donbas which is very cold and windy.
