The Peruvian Army deployed its T-55 tanks, BM-21 MRLS and Shilka as part of new exercises in the Locumba area
December 5, 2024
As part of their annual training, units of the Third Division of the Peruvian Army carried out a series of exercises in the Locumba area, near the city of Tacna. The deployment, called “Bastion of the Freedom of America”, took place at the “Eduardo Trelles” training camp under the supervision of the President of the Republic Dina Boularte Zegarra.
The head of the Executive Branch arrived at the exercise site by helicopter, also with the presence of the Minister of Defense Walter Astudillo Chávez and senior military leaders of the Army and the Armed Forces, who arrived earlier.
During the deployment, the T-55 tanks could be seen, which will be replaced by the K2 Black Panther combat vehicle from South Korea, according to a recently signed agreement between the Peruvian Army Weapons and Ammunition Factory (FAME SAC) and Hyundai Rotem, developer of the tank.
According to various sources, Peru still has 160 of the almost 300 T-55 tanks it received half a century ago from the USSR, which are currently outdated, as are the French AMX-13 tank destroyers, purchased new at the end of 1960.
With a long tradition of Soviet material, the Peruvian Army has in its inventory ZSU-23-4 Shilka anti-aircraft vehicles, which were deployed in the “Bastion of Freedom of America”, along with the BM-21 MRLS. The Shilkas were acquired during the 1970s in 36 units, without having been modernised.
With a considerable firepower thanks to its four 23 mm or 7.62 AZP-23 machine guns associated with a 20 km range RPK-2 radar, the Shilkas provide anti-aircraft cover for units deployed in combat with great mobility.
