The Duilio-class battleship Andrea Doria was the last battleship of any kind to be in commission in the Italian Navy; after two World Wars, and one of the most radical reconstructions ever done on ships of her kind, she and her sister ship served the Marina Militare Italiana even when they were all but obsolete, helping to train officers and seamen in new procedures and equipment. Finally, the flag on her went down in 1956 for the last time; after languishing for four years, at last she went to her fate, last of the forty-three ironclads and battleships of all kind that had flown the tricolore.
