Decommissioned light cruiser Raimondo Montecuccoli at La Spezia, shortly before being scrapped, June 1972
roa3l42lqgw61.webp

The Raimondo Montecuccoli was the lead ship of her class, within the Condottieri-series, and heralded a radical change in this category of ships for the Regia Marina (the previous six ships were overgrown and flawed scouts, whereas from this one proper light cruisers were built).

A rather travelled ship, she was sent to the Far East in 1937, to protect Italian interest during the Sino-Japanese War, but also showed the flag in several places (among which Sydney and other Australian ports); she eventually returned to Italy in 1939.

Assigned to the 7a Divisione (7th Division), the Montecuccoli participated in the Battle of Punta Stilo in a minor role, before doing a lot of 'grunt' work (escorts, minelaying missions, etc.). Her moment to shine came during the Battle off Pantelleria, when, during the contrast to Operation Harpoon, her and her sister ship Eugenio di Savoia scored a notable victory over their British opponents; during that engagement, she also scored an impressive long-range hit with her 152 mm (6 inch) guns, hitting the minesweeper HMS Hebe at more than 21'000 yds, a hit worthy of being mentioned alongside those of HMS Warspite and the Scharnhorst, but unfortunately little known.

After the war, the peace treaty left her to the newly rechristened Marina Militare Italiana, that put her in good use. From 1949, she was used as a training ship for the MMI cadets; a large refit in 1952 modified her accordingly (removing some of her boilers, replacing Turret no. 2 with a twin Boforst mount, fitting new radars, etc.). She travelled a lot in this role, and she notably returned to Australia in 1956-7.

On 31 May 1964 the Montecuccoli was decommissioned, being replaced in her role by the flotilla leader San Giorgio. She would be towed to La Spezia, and there scrapped in 1972.

Her military mast and one of her legendary 152 mm guns have been preserved in a park near Perugia, with a plaque commemorating the 156 missions executed, 3'678 hours in movement passed and more than 77'800 nm ran.

In reality, it was part of the factory sea trials called a "throw test". It is to test the containers and ..the safe ejection of the missile as it is launched at a pre-determined launch height and let itself fall down into the sea. Apparently it is part of the ship's emergency release of missiles.
