During Venturer's career she sank the submarines U-771 and U-864, the latter of which is noted as the only confirmed case of a submarine intentionally sinking another while both were submerged.

After the war she was sold to Norway as Utstein and later scrapped.

An exercise torpedo being fired from the destroyer Espero. Year and location unknown

As an anedocte, I read in an Italian officer's memoirs that the paramount thing, after a torpedo exercise, was to recover all torpedoes fired, because if any were missing, it came off the captain's next paycheck (and they weren't exactly cheap).

After one exercise, all torpedoes fired were recovered, but one. The junior officer supervising that was worried, because he knew that his captain wouldn't be very happy about it, and it would turn the ship into a shitshow all the way back to port. So, in his usual booming voice, he told the bridge: "Commander, all torpedoes recovered!", and then added in a much lower voice, so as not to be heard: "Minus one." So he did his duty, and the captain was happy; at least until they got back home and he had to see his paycheck would be cut, but by that time the officer would be out of the line of fire.

April 7,1940. Lt Cdr Gerard Roope awarded VC for bravery during attack on the German cruiser Admiral Hipper by HMS Glowworm. In a last attempt the captain of Glowworm ordered the crew to ram the German ship, which broke the bow off Glowworm, and she sank shortly afterwards.

Hipper was forced to retire for repairs prompting its captain to contact the Royal Navy to tell of Roope’s bravery.
