The lead ship of her class of semi-dreadnoughts, the Danton was struck 19 nm away from the southern coast of Sardinia, and sunk within 45 minutes. 296 seamen and passengers (including the commander, Capitaine de Vaisseau Joseph Delage) died, while 806 souls were saved by a destroyer and a trawler. The wreck, in "remarkably good conditions", was found in 2007.
