USN:
An F6F Hellcat entered a low altitude spin just before the ramp of USS Charger (CVE-30) in August 1943. The Hellcat hit the rear of the deck and fell down onto the stern of the ship. Charger's area of operations throughout the war was Chesapeake Bay, and her duty the basic task of training pilots and ships' crews in carrier operations.

Two carriers are anchored in the very background. One is the aircraft maintenance ship HMS Unicorn while the other is the Colossus class light fleet carrier HMS Glory. The upperworks of another ship can be seen above the bridge of the Battle class destroyer, possibly a third carrier

She was torpedoed by U-133 off Sidi Barrani on 17 January 1942 and sank after 90 minutes. The surviving crew members were saved by the Dutch destroyer Isaac Sweers which towed the stricken British destroyer through a field of burning oil and saved her entire crew of 240 sailors.
