"Night action off Cape Matapan, Greece, 28 March 1941" by Norman Wilkinson
The British battleships, under guidance of radar, moved into position under the cover of night. When they revealed themselves to the Italian cruisers, they were a mere four kilometers away--pretty much point-blank range as far as battleships are concerned. They were so close, even the carrier HMS Formidable allegedly took a few parting shots at the Italian ships with her secondary batteries, which would make her the only fleet carrier to participate in a battle line.
Three Italian cruisers were obliterated in three minutes by three undetected Queen Elizabeth-class battleships.

Momo (桃 "Peach") was the fourth of eighteen Matsu-class escort destroyer built by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The class was also designated the Type-D Destroyer (丁型駆逐艦, Tei-gata kuchikukan). Although sometimes termed "destroyer escorts", they were larger and more capable than contemporary United States Navy destroyer escorts or the Imperial Japanese Navy kaibōkan vessels. Momo was laid down 5 November 1943 and commissioned on 10 June 1944.
On 14 December she was attacked four times by aircraft under the command of Vice Admiral John McCain Sr. and was reported to have shot down five planes, though she was damaged and forced to reduce to a top speed of 14 knots. The next day, on 15 December she was sunk by the submarine USS Hawkbill and went down with most hands, including her captain, Yoshio Minagawa.
