Uhm, they are firing blanks.

Those are National Guards as they are using Ak 4 (Swedish variant of G3) and Ksp 58. It's a common practice in the Northern Europe to train in urban areas in close proximity to civilians.

During the military training "Namejs 2021", the Navy trains port and base protection, conducts practical shooting lessons, conducts naval element exercises, as well as force defense training on shore and at sea.

Wow, you triyng to say fire blank rounds from 7.62 machine gun just over bystanders like in the footage is a sort of normal thing?
You must educate yourself about basic safety rules for sure. Such shots can cause serious ear damage, especially for children.

Forgive @AND, but disagree with You. The "Neatkariga", a Latvian daily newspaper, already on September 6 indicated what would happen in the streets of some cities:

“People must be prepared to perceive unusual situations, similarly - they can experience various inconveniences. (...). Soldiers will patrol, set up bases and hideouts, checkpoints, and perform various tasks. All this will take place in the streets, backyards of residential houses. "

What is clear: during such exercises, the military used training ammunition, tried to reproduce the "war" conditions in the city, so the bang and shots could make everyday life difficult. However, everyone in Latvia knew about the Nemejs maneuvers, it was announced in advance, and the army pays out compensation for any damage that could occur during the exercises. The photos and videos of this exercise show many civilians who just stand on the streets and take pictures. The fact that one of the mothers did not foresee what could happen or had to pass that way does not mean that the soldiers are clowns. I feel sorry for the children, but this is not the fault of the soldiers.
Sorry for my English.

Ak 4 is a machine gun? And no, I didn't see that soldiers are deliberately trying to harm someone.

You Russians are really funny, you make such a fuss about some blanks, while you are perfectly OK with downing an airliner with my countrymen on-board.

What a ridiculous subject to embark on a flamefest about. Come on, folks, I've fled from the politics section of the forum to find refuge here.

It's really simple, isn't it? The exercise was announced to the public beforehand. If that announcement was anything like the standard practice elsewhere, it will have asked members of the public to maintain their distance.

I'm not a fan of pixelated camouflage patterns, but it seems to me as if the older Latvian pattern works better. I mean, the new one seems better suited for the colours encountered in pure woodland, but since it's such a small country and since all the fighting against a foreign invader would be centered around Latvia's few urban centres, I'm surprised they went for such a green-heavy scheme. Anyone have a good read on their new pattern?

I was thinking the same while viewing the photos above. The old pixel pattern blends in really well with the sandstone facades and even some painted walls of the city while it stands out in the woodlands. The new one, however, is the complete opposite.

In my opinion, it was a sensible change. Latvia has a lowland area with lots of small forests. The border with Russia is relatively short, and Latvia simply cannot afford to focus defense only in cities because they will be cut off from external aid (sea aid - through the Gulf of Riga). Cities are also not very big, there is a lot of greenery in them. The previous camouflage was supposed to be universal, but the soldiers themselves noticed that it was too bright. Attempts were made to correct this by changing the pattern and adding more green, but it did not help enough (if you look closely you will see that there are actually two pixel patterns). Hence the pattern change. Also note what is happening quietly, in the shadow of the "Zapad 2021" exercises - for example, new missile systems (including marine ones - Kalibr missiles on at least 2 ships transferred from the Black Sea Fleet) have been brought to the Kaliningrad Oblast. Not to mention what is happening in the main territory of Russia. Concentrating troops in a small area may not be a very good idea. That's why I think defense will be on approaches to cities rather than in the cities themselves.
Defending the cities will be a last resort, you will have to take into account huge losses that Latvia simply cannot afford, especially considering how much pressure is placed on artillery systems in the Russian army.

Edit: old and "new" version of pixel pattern camouflage:

I do not understand what they may be thinking when doing the maneuvers in the middle of the civilians, less shooting, even with salvos ...

All camouflage patterns introduced in the Latvian Armed Forces after 2006 in one photo (LatPat - 2007, Multi-LatPat - 2016, WoodLatPat - 2020)
