On December 19 in Budapest, the Ministry of Defense of Hungary signed an agreement with the German Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) group on the supply of Leopard 2 tanks and a 155-mm howitzer Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000).
According to the KMW press release, the Hungarian package will cover the aforementioned 44 tanks in the Leopard 2A7 + version for line units and 24 PzH 2000 howitzers, as well as 12 additional Leopard 2A4 tanks from stored surpluses for training purposes.
The new equipment is to increase the combat potential of the Hungarian land forces (Magyar Szárazföldi Haderő). The Hungarian army is currently equipped with 34 T-72M / M1 tanks in line units (as well as 130 consecutive ones in reserve). In the artillery, land forces operate only about 300 of outdated 155-mm towed howitzer M1955 (D-20).
